A Mini Bulb With Huge Features
We all would love a fully smart and autonomous house, but the reality is that unless you move into a newly built, brand new home, retrofitting your house with smart devices is generally complicated. Perhaps the most difficult transformation is automating your lighting system. Several companies have sought out to address this, but few are doing it as well as LIFX.
With a very successful kickstarter campaign, LIFX pioneered the color-changing connected lightbulb in 2012. Their first bulb, the Color 1000, was a game changer in the space and was quickly knocked off by many other brands. But LIFX’s real success is not only based on the hardware, but on their proprietary software as well. The LIFX app makes it really easy to install and manage your lights. You may set up schedules, scenes, light alarms, and even make the bulbs strobe or dance to the beat of your music.
LIFX currently offers 12 different products, but our favorite is the LIFX Mini. This small bulb is about the size of a regular lightbulb – which is uncommon for many of the “connected” devices – but still manages to offer 800 lumens of output. The high efficiency LEDs allow the bulb to only consume 9 watts at full brightness, making it save you some bucks on your energy bill. Just as the original Color 1000, the Mini is capable of producing over 16 million different colors. A new feature called Day & Dusk Mode turns your lights on and off at different shades of white to suit the time of the day. And the 22 years of estimated life on the device makes it well worth the investment; we are sure you’ll get your money back way before the light goes bad.
If you weren’t fully convinced yet, let us add that the Mini connects to Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and most importantly, Apple Homekit. Now you’ll never have to arrive home to a dark house, simply configure the automation on Apple’s Homekit app and use “when I arrive” as a geo-trigger.
